Senior secondary students are invited to participate in an all day field trip to Copper Mountain Mine near Princeton, BC for an opportunity to learn about this modern mining operation and to be introduce the the wide variety of careers of employees as this complex, natural resource operation.

Copper Mountain has been the site of several different stages of mining activity dating back to 1923. The modern operation reopened in 2011 with new deposits discovered and new infrastructure built to process the ore. It is a huge operation that uses enormous equipment to mine some 190,000 tonnes each day and process some 40,000 tonnes of ore through the mill to recover copper, gold and silver. Ths mine employs 430 people in diverse roles:equipment operators, all types of trades, scientists, engineers, and technologists as well as accounting, HR, communications and logistics specialists.

The tour will include pit operations, the machine shop, the mill, and reclamation activities. It will be a great opportunity to learn about the mining process from the people who work there and to see how students' career interests apply in this natural resource industry..


Coach transportation from Vancouver and points east is provided.
Depart: Vancouver Technical Secondary, 2600 E Broadway, 6:00am 
Pick-up 1 Langley (Colossus Langley Cinemas parking lot) 6:40am
Pick-up 2 Abbotsford (Whatcom Rd & Hwy 1) 7:10 am 
Pick-up 3 Princeton Chevron station (~9:30 am)
Return: Vancouver Technical School 7:00 pm (earlier for Abbotsford & Langley)

Bring your own snacks and water. Lunch is provided by Copper Mountain Mine.  The tour is largely outdoors. Dress prepared for fall (cool, wet) weather. Where heavy duty, closed toe boots. No tennis shoes or sandals. Hiking boots are preferred, steel toe boots if you have them.

Registration Deadline: Friday October 11, 2019. Registration at this time will determine if the tour will go ahead or be cancelled. Registraiton will remain open thereafter till October 18 pending available seats.

Teachers must nominate students to attend by emailing detailing the student's name, grade and career interest. Students are required to be in a Work Experience or Secondary School Apprenticeship program. Students not enrolled in these programs will be considered on a case by case basis. Teachers are also welcome to accompany their students, and must also register through Eventbrite.
